Wanted to see what the best practices are on encrypting a tape.

What are the pros and cons with using this process?

We use commvualt for encryption.   We used to use 3DES but had to move to AES. 3DES puts bigger CPU load on your sever and takes longer to dump to tape. Commvault has an article on what encryption is faster.

We have our tape drive within our library do the encryption. It seems fast enough. It can be configured in your storage policy copy, in the data path properties. The catch is of course that your tape drive must support hardware encryption, and also any tape drive that you plan on using in the future for restorations.
