We are running synchronous Deduplicated copies to Amazon S3. We realized recently based on the monthly bill that not only are our Full backups being copied, Our Incrementals are being copied as well and for some of our SPs this is unnecessary due to the nature of these backups that once a full is done, the incrementals are worthless for retention purposes. Looking at the copy properties the Selective Option is grayed out.

Is it possible to convert a synchronous copy to a selctive copy? Or do we need to create a new copy with a new dedupe Database

Hi Jim, hope you are well.

Can't really convert an existing copy from Synchronous to Selective, however here are a few options I'm thinking of for you.

    1.  Since you only want Fulls, drop the retention on the existing Synchronous copy to 1 day 1 cycle, and under the Extended Retention rules set retention for "All Fulls" this way the Inc's will age off quickly and only Fulls will remain.

    2.  Create a new Selective copy, and choose the Synchronous copy as the source (under Copy Policy) tab, and copy over the jobs you would like (i.e Weekly Fulls) based on the criteria you need on this Selective, and once the copy is done, you can remove the older Synchronous copy altogether.

Open a ticket with Commvault support and ask for Script "sql_9.0.0B84_ConvertSyncToSelectiveCopy". This script is a restricted use script that allows you to convert from sync to selective.
