With dedupe from source in version 9 do you still need to have a media agent license on the source server as well as the file system ida?

No. The source server is not a media agent. With Source deduplication you are simply performing the deduplication on the client side before transferring the data over the network.

Deduplication on the source (client) side identifies and eliminates redundant data at the source, thereby shrinking the storage space as well as the network bandwidth required for data protection operations.

It allows client to deduplicate at the source against data sent from other clients for the global deduplication.

    This feature requires following license:

    • Block Level De-Duplication license on the MediaAgent hosting the deduplication store
