Wanted to know how you guys are managing the installation of Microsoft patches, particularly in automating the stopping /starting of the Commvault services in the CS, MA etc.  We are tossing the idea to use CV Workflows or PowerShell and schedule.  Please let me know your experiences in the way you have automated the stopping/starting of the Commvault services.  Thank you

    Hi ,

We have an Workflow in software store to manage patching of  Windows/SQL updates. Please refer below documentation.

    http://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=features/workflow/templates/install_win_updates.htm

Regarding your question on how to start/stop service you can use WMI apis or GxAdmin.exe has the functionality to start/Stop CV service via command line.

    GxAdmin.exe -ConsoleMode

will list all the supported options.

    Jedi,

Thanks for your post.  We have a similar PS, however I'm looking to see how the work flow has been setup to run the PS script and if possible suspend all jobs and place the servers in maintenance mode then at a specific time run another script to start services and have CV remove the maintenance mode and start jobs.

Currently we have been testing with windows task, we believe CV workflow might be best to target multiple servers without having to setup a task on each one.

    Kloganathan,

Thanks for your post, based on the description it workflow should be a lot of help.  However, when reading the read me file it states we need to be at v11 SP4 or higher.  We are currently in v10 so this would not work for us now.

v11 requirement is there because we use new API to start/Stop service  from GXAdmin. I will see if we can remove that requirement , test it in v10 and get back to you.

Try the attached workflow to see if this is what you want.

    The workflow will:

    1. Disable backup scheduler on CS

    2. Get list of MA and Put MA's in Maintenance Mode

    3. Suspend All Jobs and check to ensure the jobs have been suspended before proceeding

*4. Not connected in the workflow - Connect job suspended line to ForEachMA2. This will run your script on each MA. Under Execute Command, change the path where your script reside.

    5. Suspend workflow after the scripts ran.

    6. Enables backup scheduler on CS

    7. Take MA out of Maintenance Mode.

    8. Resume All jobs

    Hope this works for you.
