If you do Offline Content Indexing, do you backup your index?

We do this for email archive searches and Compliance searches.  But the original installation was never configured to backup this index.  Four and a half years later, that content index store is over 9 TB.  I guess the consequeces of losing that is "no more searches".  Just wondering what others do.
