    Hallo Forum,

we have migratied our FileServer from plattform 2008R2 to 2016 Std. Next we want to remove the FileArchive solution. At the moment we have got still stubbed files on the fileservers share. To do the recall of our third storage pool we will need some free space. Is it possible to start the Deduplication on the fileserver itselfes? Is this possible with stubbed files on it. Are there any experience on it?

    Hi Philipp,

Are you referring to deduplication during backup? If so then yes Source-side deduplication on client is available.

Stubbed files will be ignored by commvault deduplication, no issue in combination with deduplication for the rest of the backup data.

If I misinterpreted your question please let me know.

    Hi Jos1982_NL,

its independent from backup behaviour. I want to know whats happen with the stubbed files on the NTFS volume drive on our file server if we will active deduplication on the windows server system itselfes (not deduplication on CV in backup process).

    Thanks a lot

By default windows deduplicates every file on a volume, I would personally exclude stub files by filtering files below a certain size. If you define a MinimalFileSize parameter which just exceeds your stub file size you should be fine.

    Hi,

CV stubs will not be subject to deduplication. As and when the stubs get recalled, deduplication will take over. Just wanted to highlight one thing that - with archiving and stubs, when restore is needed to any other medium, stubs can be brought back with instant savings on disk. If you would like to have  call to discuss archiving and its benefits, we will be happy to. Please do let us know.
