  • Backup Only New Archive Folders

Hello.  We have a NetApp filer that is being used as an archive destination sorted into folders per week. e.g. Y2019_01.  These folders go back years and the data does not change.  The full back up is 100TB, but only increases 100GB - 900GB per week.

We cannot perform a full on a regular schedule due to we copy our data over a WAN for DR.

What backup stradegy works best to only backup the new folders?

    Option 1

    • Synthetic Full (incr forever) - still requires the synth full to run once in a while ( at lease once per retention period - ours is 42 days), which would put a strain on the WAN even with a DASH copy.

    Option 2

    • OnePass - but we do not need the data to be removed from the NetApp.

    Option 3

    • manually remove existing folder and add new folder to the subclient each week.
    • programatically perform this?  Not sure how this can be done.

    Option 4

    • Other ideas?

    Thanks,

    Dan

    Hi Dan

There aren't any hard set rules on which option would be better than the other. However seeing how this is Archive Data, and the rate of change is not too substantial, I believe going down the route of Synthetic Fulls (incr forever), and subsequent DASH Copy would be most suitable.

Since the rate of change is not too large, and assuming the Deduplication ratio is high, during DASH Copy (using Network Optimized), the amount of unique data transferred should be minimal, meaning overall time over WAN should be under control.

The purpose of SynthFull and DASH Copy will also mean you have redudancy in-case anything happens to the Primary Copy.

    Thank you

    Winston
