We have a primary site with a CommCell "A", MediaAgent "A", and library "A". Data of the production environment is backed up there.
But when restoring, we must do it on the secondary site.
So we are thinking of different methods to do so (currently, the method is restoring to the primary site, replicating using storage replication to the secondary site, and finally using the restored info on the secondary site. This takes ages.).
Both sites are connected via SAN (16G, quite fast) and LAN (1G, too slow to move backup data) .
Extending the Commvault environment to the secondary site is an option. So, we are thinking about installing a MediaAgent "B" and connecting it to the CommCell "A" on the primary site.
- Auxiliary copy would be an option. A disk or tape library would be required on the secondary site. But the required restores are so random we would never know what to copy beforehand, so it could take as much as the current method.
- Another option (NEED TO KNOW IF IT'S POSSIBLE) could be connecting the MediaAgent "B" installed on the secondary site with the library "A" on the primary site. As I said, SAN is extended between both sites. Is it possible to do this? Using the MediaAgent "A" on the primary site to backup data on tape, then using the MediaAgent "B" on the secondary site to restore that data from the same tape of the same library "A". (is this just as easy as changing data paths?)
- Another option (NEED TO KNOW IF IT'S POSSIBLE) could be installing a library "B" on the secondary site, along with the MediaAgent "B". Then physically moving the tape from the library "A" on the primary to the library "B" on the secondary site and restoring using the secondary MediaAgent "B" and Library "B". Is this possible? I understand that Commvault can restore from ANYWHERE. But there is a "importing" step that makes me think it could take much longer than the current method. Please let me know if this is a quick process (since the tape and data inside are already known by Commvault and the CommCell environment is the same) or if this could indeed take long.
About the last option: there is another library "C" on the secondary site, this one belongs to a different CommCell "C". We could also try to make that library "C" read the tapes from CommCell "A". Is that possible? Also, would it take as much as the last option? Or maybe even more?
Data is not encrypted and deduplication is not used.
