    Hi there,

I would like to do daily continuous incremental for my Virtual Machines with monthly Synthetic Full to disk, but also have a weekly synthetic full to tape.

    Is this possible?

    Hi Ridcardoduarte

It won't be possible to run two Synthetic Full schedule, one to Tape and one to Disk with different period, because every time you run a Synthetic Full it will complete a cycle.

    Consider doing the following:

    • Do Incremental and Weekly Synthetic Full to Disk (with shorter retention such as 14 Days, 2 Cycles) and you can also set the end of month Synthetic Full for Long-term Retention (if required)
    • Create another Selective Copy to Tape, only selecting Weekly Fulls to be copied. Now you can also control the retention on how long you would like to keep on Tape (as this is a separate copy to the Disk Copy).
By doing the above you, will have Incremental running during the week, a Synthetic Full written to Disk, and then only the weekly Synthetic Full will be copied to Tape. Once the Weekly Synthetic Full is copied to Tape and has met retention (base on how you set it up), it will then naturally age out on Disk and be retained on Tape
    Hopefully this helps

    Hi ricardoduarte,

the only option having independent Full Cycles (one for Disk, and another one for Tape) is having multiple backupsets.

But I'm absolutly sure: you don't want to run synFull backups against Tapes !
This might take ages to complete, because previous Full has to be read from tape and merged w/ incr done to tape.

It can be a good Idea to

    - run weekly synFull to disk
    - create a selective AuxCopy on each Full to Tape

by this you end up in 4 synFull on disk per month (instead of one) but if you use Dedupe, this schould not add to much data on the disk.
If you realy have to, you can age the data on Disk in between the monthly cycle, but the last (active) cycle will always remain on disk

    never mind
