Exchange Online Backup

    Hello 

    I am after some information on Exchange Online Backup with Commvault. 

    Have you got it working successfully (100% of the mailboxes, 100% of the time)?

    Are you running fully cloud or on-prem hybrid?

    How many mailboxes are you backing up from the cloud (Exchange Online)?

    I am trying to backup 450 mailboxes from Exchange Online and get only 26% through when the errors:

    7852  7     02/10 07:53:14 23232 ### CVFetchMessages::Messages - API: FindItems. Exception: [The request failed. The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server.]. Attempt number: [1]

    Start filling up the logs.

    Commvault support have been investigating and supporting the issue and believe this is a Microsoft throttling issue.

    Microsoft are investigating.

    Hello Rob, May I have the following info: 1. What is the total size of the mailboxes you are expecting. 2.How many service accounts you are using for the backup purpose 3. Are you backing up the Exchange Online(Access through Azure AD). If not please specify. Cheers!

    Hi SHAKS 

    1. Total size of the mailbox is a difficult one. Our mailboxes range in size from 900mb to 19GB we average about 3gb. 

    2, We were using 4 service accounts, as part of the Commvault testing we're currently running on 1 now. We aren’t sure if service accounts will make any difference our backups are running through a dedicated DSL line and the ISP is recording 100% utilisation on the line. 

    3. Exchange online Access through Azure AD.

    This is throttling from Microsoft.

    We have thousands of customer with office 365 mail protection.

    Throttling is more prevelant for first full job and once first full is done for all mailboxes, then we hardly see throttling error.

    Now, you can start with below approach

    1. Rather ran running job on sublclient level, you can run this on batch of 100 mailboxes. 

    2. Once all mailboxes are done with full backup job, then enable subclient level schedule.

     

    If MS disabled throttling for your tenant, then you can simply start archive job on entire subclient.

    We're trying in batches, but we keep getting:

    So getting the inital backup is proving to be the issue. 

     

    BTW, our tenant is based in the Easten USA and the Commvault is in the UK so the data has a bit of a round trip.

    please ask MS to disable throttling for your tenant for only 2 to 3 weeks.

    Please reduce batch size to working value.

    Hi 

    I have made the request to microsoft, they are going to "see if this is possible" with the required team. 

    I just tried to backup 10 mailboxes and all 10 failed with:

     

    The request failed. The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server.

    Hi ManojB 

    Microsoft has decided that it won't do anything about the throttling policy on the tenant.

     

    At the moment any attempt to run a backup fails. We waiting for Commvault to now review the next step.
