We have lots of VM datastores we backup across multiple arrays.   Many of the backups go to one Storage policy.  One particular Storage array is getting a little over run with the backup traffic.   I could reduce the stream count on the storage policy, but that does not guarantee that I would run less backup streams from one particular array.  In my situation these are all Backup Copy jobs.

Is anyone aware if there an option to limit the number of backup streams to one particular storage array?  For example if I have 4 storage arrays and my Storage policy has 100 streams, you could estimate that each array would get 25 streams.  Or it could end up with one array using all 100 streams.  It would be handy to be able to have a control point say under the Array Management to limit the streams to that particular array.   We have some arrays that are using spinning disk, and some that are flash.   We know the spinning disk array can not run as many backups streams as the Flash arrays, but we do not want to lower the total streams for the storage policy as we would then not run as many backups from the flash arrays.

I do not think there is any option for this, but maybe some other creative way to accomplish the same goal?

    Hi Farmer

I don't believe there are any available options to throttle or control how many streams will be utilized during Backup Copy across different Array configuration pointing to a single Storage Policy.

I do believe such a feature will be beneficial for large environment.

I would recommend to engage Commvault Support and see if they can raise a Change Modification Request, which will then be vetted by Commvault Development. If deemed plausible this might be included in the product as a new feature or enhancement.

    Winston,

Thank you for the confirmation.   I have put in the request for modification.   In the meantime I have setup another storage policy and moved all the backups for that array to it, and throttling the streams there

    Thank you again

    Hi Farmer

    Thanks for the update

Good to know a change request is put in. It definitely sounds like a plausible feature that will help alot of Administrators managing large environments
