    Hi,

I would like to confirm if Synthetic full backup actually occupy space on disk library or are they just the pointers from the incremental backups from that cycle? So when a synthetic full is done it will occupy the space on the disk or tape like a normal full would do.

    Thanks,

    Nazish

If you have deduplication enabled utilising DASH Fulls, then the Storage Library will not grow occupy fresh disk space and in simplistic terms pretty much does as you have described. If you don't have DASH fulls, then the synthetic full will occupy fresh storage.

Synthetic full backups consolidate the data from the latest full backup or synthetic full backup together with any subsequent incremental backups, instead of reading and backing up data directly from the client computer. Since synthetic full backups do not back up data from the client computer, this operation imposes no load on the client computer.

During a synthetic full backup, a list of objects from previous backup is generated and the latest version of each object is considered to build new backup image.
