    Hi,

Are there any guidelines for using Azure Immutability and Commvault software deduplication? If I use 12 Monthly backups with an Immutability retention of 365 days (equal to Commvault retention), should I use Commvault deduplication and if so, do I need to seal the DDB from time to time, or not deduplicate against blocks older than nnn days?

    Thanks.

    Please follow below steps

    1. Set seal frequency option "Create new DDB every [] days" to 182 in the Storage Policy Copy Properties dialog box. Since your retention is 365 days so sealing at 182 days ensures that all data is immutable till 365 days and we start pruning only after this.

    2. Disable Micro-pruning on the mount paths. For more information on disabling micro-pruning, see Configuring Micro Pruning.  Since data is immutable till 365 days so disabling micro pruning will make sure to not try pruning as soon as a job is aged. We attempt pruning only when all jobs on the sealed DDB are aged, that comes to 365 days.

At second thought, this procedure might work well from a Commvault point of view, but from an Azure and compliance point of view, data can be deleted after 1 year (after the immutability expires) and the Commvault backups referring to blocks from earlier backups would still become unusable.
