We have recently moved all of our disk storage backups to AES256 Software Commvault encryption. On our CommServ DR policy we have multiple copies including disk storage units, tape drives, and a USB drive. If I understand correctly, since the encryption keys are required and are stored in the CommServ Database all of these copies would be pointless, excluding the raw DR backup files that are done initially. So are all these copies pointless to do then or is there something to the Media Acccess Password for this scenario? Can the media access password be used in conjuction w/ software encryption? Any tips or best practices for this scenario?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Hi JCutter03

You can definitely configure Software Encryption as well as Media Password.

For CommServe DR backup - the Via Media Password is the default option and you cannot change the option. The DR backups require the keys store on the media

This is because in a Disaster Recovery Scenario where the CommServe is not available, you can use Media Explorer which will prompt for a pass-phrase (as set part of the Media Password) as an added level security.

The following documentation provides more details on Software Encryption - https://documentation.commvault.com/commvault/v11/article?p=7779.htm

Feel free to reach out if you have any further query or clarification
