    I'm processing bulk email stub recalls for an exchange environment using cvrecallmailbox.exe.

    For one particular mailbox it is able to identify 204 stubs but fails recalling any of them. The ouput is a mix of the following messages:

    • RestoreMsgEx : Received invalid response --> 0
    • RestoreMsgEx : Received invalid response --> 1397902660
    • RestoreMsgEx : Job completed. Status FAIL.
    All other mailboxes in the system are recalling successfully. The command in use is:
    cvrecallmailbox.exe <outlook-profile> -f <input-file-path> <exchange-server> <domain-controller> <commvault-proxy> 8402 -o <output-file-path>
    The input file contains a number of mailboxes all specified without a folder similar to the following:
    mailbox@domain,
    mailbox2@domain,

    Hi Doug,

    Have you had success with recall for other users in the environment? What Service Pack/Feature Release are you on?

    What version of CV are the stubs created under and which archiving agent was used? (Exchange Mailbox Archiver, Mailbox (Classic) with OnePass or V2 Mailbox Agent).

    Also check the ClMgrS.log and DMRExRestore.log on the mailbox proxy here where the persistent recovery should be starting.

    Is the persistent recovery operation on the proxy starting in JobManager?

    If you can identify the stubs in Outlook, can you try to open with Outlook Add-in for your CV Version?

    If the stub recall fails, try browsing for the data in the latest backup from which ever agent did the archiving and verify the data is browseable. If it is, try restoring from here and ensure that the restore completes.

    Thanks David,

    • Able to restore other mailboxes: Yes. This is the only mailbox of 111 that has failed.
    • Current Commvault version: 11 SP18
    • Agent used to create stubs: Exchange Mailbox (Classic)
    • Commvault version used to create stubs: Unknown
    • Persistent Recovery job starts successfully: Yes
    • Outlook Add-in: Unavailable to me (my account post-dates when archiving was in use)
    • Browse & Restore: Job history for the agents is no longer available

    Hi Doug,

    Thanks for these answers. It's a good sign that you're seeing persistent recovery start, can you confirm that you're seeing the DMRExRestore.exe process starting on the proxy as well?

    If you can't see the backup history here, then that sounds worrying. Is everything aged? Is data available on tape? I would at least expect to see one Synth Full backup in the backup history here, as Commvault makes it very hard to delete the last cycle of any OnePass enabled subclients.

    Also to test in Outlook Add-in you can log into the proxy as the service account, install Outlook-Addin and open Outlook then attach a mailbox that has stubs you're trying to recall. The Service Account should be able to attach the mailbox if the permissions are set correctly. If the recall fails check the CVArchiverAddin.log at %localappdata%.

    If you haven't already, you should consider raising a support case for this.

    David
